Holme Lacy March 2018

Holme Lacy House Hotel, Herefordshire,

9th March 2018

We had a great time on the HADARA trip to Holme Lacy. The grounds were extensive, but sadly most of the time it was too wet to explore very far. The food was excellent with plenty of choice and the evening entertainment was very good.

We had a coach trip to Hereford on the Saturday and saw lots of volunteers making and fixing poppies into their ‘Weeping Window’ event at the cathedral to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1. It rained there most of the day but didn’t deter us from exploring and shopping.

On Sunday we set off to pick up our guide ready to visit Monmouth for a lunch break via the Welsh/Herefordshire border countryside. Despite warmer temperatures and lots of rain, there was still snow on many edges of roads and fields.

The view from Symonds Yat was beautiful and seeing the falcons was a bonus.

We then proceeded to the Dean Forest Railway for a steam train ride followed by a cream tea. This turned out to be the highlight of the weekend with scintillating guided commentary on the connections to JK Rowling, Jimmy Young, latex gloves and the Horlicks brothers!!  The steam train ride had us all in stitches but we would not want to spoil that surprise for future travellers!! Fortunately Jim explained to the guide that the commentary was not required on the return journey so we could all have a snooze.

It was sad to return home on Monday, but our driver Andrew was brilliant and got us back safely and in good time. Well done and thanks to Jim for organising such a brilliant weekend.
